Huskies defeat Mounties 7-0
HALIFAX, NS – Saint Mary's forward Charlotte Buffie scored a goal and an assist, leading the Huskies to 7-0 win over the Mount Allison Mounties in Atlantic University Sport women's hockey action on Friday night at the Dauphinee Centre in Halifax.
The Huskies opened the scoring just over a minute into the action, as after a wrap-around attempt from forward Avery Cant (Waterloo, ON), Kara MacLean (Antigonish, NS) stuffed the rebound past Mounties goaltender Silia Gregg (Windsor, ON), giving SMU an early 1-0 lead.

Saint Mary's netminder Ridleigh Hansen (Red Deer, AB) helped keep that lead with a huge shorthanded breakaway save on Mounties forward Mollie Grabe (Carleton Place, ON) late in the period.

The Huskies outshot the Mounties 19-8 through the opening 20 minutes, but Gregg's 18 saves helped keep the Mounties within a goal heading into the first intermission.
Saint Mary's doubled their lead just over two minutes into the second period, as Abby McCarthy (Falmouth, NS) scored a wicked backhand shot off the faceoff for her first goal of the season, giving the Huskies a 2-0 lead, 2:18 into the second period.

The Huskies outshot the Mounties 12-7, taking a 31-15 advantage through 40 minutes of play, and a 2-0 lead into second intermission.
Saint Mary's offence exploded in the third period, as they scored five unanswered goals. First it was forward Renee Olsen (Yarmouth, NS) who stole the puck in the Mounties end and made a quick pass over to linemate Mia Faseruk (Winnipeg, MB) who snapped a shot past Gregg's blocker to make it 3-0, 3:29 into the third period.

Just under two minutes later, the Huskies added to their lead as forward Charlotte Buffie (Winnipeg, MB) took a pass from linemate Jillian Duggan (Halifax, NS) and broke out on a one-on-one, lifting a sweet shot over Gregg's shoulder to extend the lead to 4-0, 5:28 into the third.

The Huskies fifth goal came courtesy of Jillian Duggan, who received a feed from linemate Gillian Lapierre (Port Coquitlam, BC) and batted in her own rebound to extend the lead to 5-0, 8:55 into the third.

Huskies forward Ava Shearer (Windsor, NS) scored the sixth goal of the evening, as after winning a face-off her initial shot was blocked, but her follow up beat Gregg high to make it 6-0, 16:23 into the period.

Less than a minute later, Avery Cant finished off the scoring, deflecting in an Anna Barrington (St. John's, NL) point shot to finish off the 7-0 win.

The Huskies outshot the Mounties 47-22 on the night, with Ridleigh Hansen (Red Deer, AB) turning away 22 shots for the shutout, while Silia Gregg stopped 40 shots in defeat.
Charlotte Buffie was named Player of the Game for the Huskies with one goal and one assist, while teammates Jillian Duggan (one goal, one assist), Avery Cant (one goal, one assist) and Keyara Nelson (two assists) also recorded multi-point nights for SMU.
With the win, the Huskies improve to 7-6-0-1 on the season, and lead the AUS with 45 goals scored through 14 games. Saint Mary's will be back on home ice on Saturday afternoon, as they host the STFX X-Women (10-4-0-0) at 3 p.m. at the Dauphinee Centre, for the annual Huskies Red Tape doubleheader, an anti-bullying and racism awareness campaign. The Mounties record drops to 0-15 on the campaign. Mount Allison will also be back in action on Saturday, visiting the Dalhousie Tigers (6-5-2-2) at 7 p.m. at the Halifax Forum.
