Dunlop and Kobayashi named Huskies Athletes of the Week: Jan. 6-12, 2025

Men's track & field athlete Mason Dunlop and women's basketball guard Aki Kobayashi have been named Huskies Athletes of the Week, sponsored by Freeman's Little New York Halifax, for the week ending January 12th, 2025.

Mason Dunlop / Men's Track & Field / Middle Musquodoboit, NS / 3rd year / Commerce

Mason Dunlop, a third year thrower from Middle Musquodoboit, NS, is the Huskies male athlete of the week for the week of Jan. 6-12, 2025.

Huskies track & field competed at this weekend's Moncton Open, where Dunlop threw a pair of personal bests. 

Dunlop won the men's shot put with a personal best throw of 15.10 metres, placing him seventh in the current U SPORTS rankings.

In the men's weight throw, Dunlop finished second with a personal best throw of 14.96 metres, breaking the Saint Mary's school record.

Last season, Dunlop won a silver medal in shot put at the AUS Championships, and went on to the U SPORTS Nationals, where he finished 11th in the country. 

Aki Kobayashi / Women's Basketball / Osaka, Japan / 5th year / Commerce

Aki Kobayashi, a fifth year guard from Osaka, Japan, is the Huskies female athlete of the week for the week of Jan. 6-12, 2025.

Over a pair of Huskies wins, Kobayashi averaged 18.0 points, 4.5 assists, 4.5 rebounds and 1.0 steals per game.

In Friday's 69-48 win over the UPEI PanthersKobayashi was named Player of the Game, scoring a career-high 28 points on 11/16 shooting from the field, adding four rebounds, one assist and one blocked shot.

In Saturday's 63-39 win over the PanthersKobayashi stuffed the stat-sheet with eight points, eight assists, five rebounds and two steals.

On the season, Kobayashi leads the AUS in total assists (55), assists per game (5.0), and ranks fourth in total steals (19) and ninth in scoring (149 points, 13.5 points per game).

The Huskies wins improved their record to 11-0 on the season. Saint Mary's will hit the road for their next three games (Jan. 17 @ UNB, Jan. 24 & 25 @ Memorial), before returning to the Homburg Centre to host the Cape Breton Capers on Feb. 1 at 6 p.m. GET TICKETS
