Huskies defeat Tigers 8-1 on Senior Night

HALIFAX, NS – Saint Mary's forward Ben Allison scored two goals and an assist on his senior night, helping the Huskies clinch home ice advantage in the Atlantic University Sport men's hockey quarterfinal with a 8-1 win over the Dalhousie Tigers on Saturday night at the Dauphinee Centre in Halifax.

It was Senior Night for the Huskies as they honoured four graduating seniors – Derek Gentile, Ben Boyd, Ben Allison and Connor Olson – ahead of their final regular season home game at Saint Mary's.

Saint Mary's opened the scoring just over four minutes into the first, as forward Dylan Andrews (Cole Harbour, NS) snapped a shot that was denied by Tigers goaltender Robbie Forbes (Oakville, ON), but Liam Arnsby jumped on the rebound and fired it into goal, putting SMU ahead 1-0.

Just a minute later, the Huskies were on the powerplay and doubled the lead, as the two leading scorers in the country, forwards Reid Valade (Caledon, ON) and Ben Allison (Halifax, NS) connected on a give-and-go, with Allison feeding Valade for his U SPORTS leading 27th goal of the season. Valade's 27 goals ties former Husky Tom McDonnell (1979-80) as the third highest single-season goal total in program history.

The Huskies outshot the Tigers 15-5 through the opening 20 minutes and took a 2-0 lead into first intermission.

The second period saw the Huskies add to their lead with a trio of powerplay goals. First it was defenceman Nolan Dillingham (Mississauga, ON) who fired a wicked one-timer off a feed from Landon Cato (Ajax, ON), beating Forbes top corner to make it 3-0, 7:35 into the second.

Several minutes later, Saint Mary's forward Dylan Andrews added to the lead with a goal-of-the-year candidate, as he took a give-and-go pass from forward Will Chisholm (Lunenburg, NS) and put the puck through his legs before lifting it bar down, extending the Huskies lead to 4-0, 14:09 into the second period.

Two minutes later, Ben Allison made it 5-0 with another powerplay goal, firing a wrist shot high off a pass from defenceman Ethan Ritchie (Oakville, ON), 16:28 into the second period.

The Huskies outshot the Tigers 22-4 in the second period, taking a 37-9 shots advantage through two periods and a 5-0 lead into second intermission.

The Huskies powerplay assault continued into the third period, as 5:34 into the frame, Ben Allison again took a pass from Ethan Ritchie and sniped a wrist shot for his second goal of the night and 23rd of the campaign, making it 6-0 for the hosts.

Midway through the period, Huskies forward Ben Boyd (Dartmouth, NS) knocked in a rebound for a goal on his senior night, extending the SMU lead to 7-0.

Dalhousie got one back a few minutes later as forward Brody Fournier (Perth, ON) found linemate Ryan Del Monte (Mississauga, ON) in front, and he beat Huskies netminder Ben West (Barrie, ON) to make it 7-1.

Saint Mary's restored their touchdown advantage off a goal from forward Davis Cooper (Hammonds Plains, NS) with 1:44 remaining in regulation, securing the 8-1 win to finish off the regular season.

The Huskies outshot the Tigers 52-15 on the night, with Ben West making 14 saves for the win, while Robbie Forbes turned away 44 shots in defeat.

Huskies forward Ben Allison was named Player of the Game, scoring two goals and an assist, and officially finishes the regular season as the U SPORTS Point Leader with 50 points (23 goals, 27 assists) in 30 games played, while linemate Reid Valade is the nation's leading goal scorer with 27 goals in 30 games played.

With the win, Saint Mary's finished the season with a record of 16-10-1-3, good for fourth place in the AUS standings. They'll now head into a playoff matchup against the #5 seed UPEI Panthers (17-13-0-0), with game one being played at the Dauphinee Centre with the schedule to be confirmed this week.

The Tigers finish the season with a record of 2-25-2-1, and will miss out on the AUS Playoffs.
