HALIFAX, NS – Saint Mary's forward Reid Valade scored a natural hat-trick in the third period and added two assists, leading the Huskies to a convincing 7-3 win over the Acadia Axemen in Atlantic University Sport men's hockey action on Wednesday night at the Dauphinee Centre in Halifax.

The Huskies opened the scoring just over three minutes into action, as a shot by Reid Valade (Caledon, ON) rang off the post, but Ben Allison (Halifax, NS) was able to stuff the rebound past Axemen goaltender Thomas Couture (Levis, QC), giving Saint Mary's a 1-0 lead, 3:08 into the first.

The Axemen equalized midway through the period with a goal from Kian Bell (Fall River, NS), as he finished off a three-on-one, tying the game at 1-1, 9:47 into the first.

Midway through the second period, the Axemen were looking to add to their lead on the powerplay, but it was the Huskies who scored, with defenceman Ethan Ritchie (Oakville, ON) stealing the puck and sending Da Fonseca and Matthew MacDonald (Halifax, NS) on a two-on-none breakaway, as the two forwards passed it back and forth four times before MacDonald beat a diving Couture for a shorthanded goal, tying the game at 3-3, 12 minutes into the second.

With under two minutes remaining in the period, the Huskies took the lead, as Valade stole the puck behind the Axemen goal and centred in front to Allison, who scored his second of the night and U SPORTS leading 15th goal of the campaign, giving the Huskies a 4-3 lead.

The Huskies outshot the Axemen 17-8 through the second period and took a 4-3 lead into intermission.

The third period was the Reid Valade show as the forward exploded for a natural hat-trick with all three goals coming on the powerplay.

First the Huskies cycled the puck on the powerplay, with Ben Boyd (Dartmouth, NS) cutting in on goal and firing a shot that was saved by Couture, but Valade jumped on the rebound, extending the lead to 5-3, 5:18 into the third period.

Less than two minutes later Saint Mary's were back on the powerplay and Ethan Ritchie sent a breakout pass to Valade, who played a perfect give-and-go with Ben Allison to extend the lead to 6-3, 7:19 into the period.

Valade finished off the natural hat-trick at the 14:01 mark, as he took a pass from Charlie Da Fonseca and directed it high past Couture to secure the 7-3 win.
