Godin’s hat-trick leads X-Men to 7-4 win over Huskies

HALIFAX, NS – STFX forward Dominik Godin scored a hat-trick and added an assist, leading the X-Men to a 7-4 win over the Saint Mary's Huskies in Atlantic University Sport men's hockey action on Friday night at the Dauphinee Centre in Halifax, N.S.

The Huskies took an early lead, as defenceman Ethan Ritchie (Oakville, ON) brought the puck into the corner and centred in front, where a deflected puck ended up on the stick of forward Davis Cooper (Hammonds Plains, NS), who made no mistake, scoring his first as a Husky to give the hosts a 1-0 lead, 4:50 into the first.

Saint Mary's doubled their lead several minutes later, as on the powerplay, defenceman Jacob Holmes (Allison, ON) dropped a pass off to Will Chisholm (Lunenburg, NS) who beat X-Men goaltender Patrick Leaver (Perth, ON) five-hole, putting the Huskies ahead 2-0, 9:45 into the period.

But the X-Men were able to tie it up before the period was over. On a four-on-three powerplay, forward Charlie Callaghan (Toronto, ON) took a pass from forward Ryan McGuire (Burlington, ON) and fired a high shot that beat Huskies netminder Ben West (Barrie, ON) to cut the lead to 2-1, 12:58 into the second period.

STFX tied it up with just 23 seconds remaining, as forward Logan Chisholm (Antigonish, NS) cycled the puck to defenceman Raegan Wiles (Calgary, AB) who fired a one-timer to tie it at 2-2.

The X-Men outshot the Huskies 13-9 in the first period, and the two teams went into intermission deadlocked 2-2.

Saint Mary's took the lead on a powerplay goal just over two minutes into the second, with Reid Valade (Caledon, ON) taking a pass from Charlie Da Fonseca (Thornhill, ON), with Valade's AUS leading 11th goal of the campaign putting the Huskies ahead 3-2.

But the back-and-forth affair continued, as midway through the period, X-Men forward Dominik Godin (Sudbury, ON) scored a powerplay goal off a rebound to tie the game at 3-3.

Just over a minute later, STFX took their first lead of the night, as Raegan Wiles scored his second goal, cleaning up a Lucas Canning (Stellarton, NS) rebound, putting the X-Men ahead 4-3.

The X-Men outshot the Huskies 11-10 in the second period, and took a 4-3 lead into second intermission.

Saint Mary's tied it up again just 23 seconds into the third period, with Reid Valade taking a backdoor feed from Jacob Holmes to tie it at 4-4.

But two minutes later, STFX took the lead again, with Logan Chisholm picking up a puck on the wall centring a pass to Godin, who fired a one-timer past West to put the X-Men ahead 5-4, 2:25 into the third period.

Chisholm added to the lead just over a minute later, taking a pass from forward Matt Cato (Whitby, ON) and quickly releasing a high shot to extend the lead to 6-4.

Godin finished off his hat-trick with an empty net goal with 18 seconds remaining, putting the finishing touches on the X-Men 7-4 victory.

Godin was named Player of the Game for the X-Men with three goals and an assist, while Raegan Wiles (two goals, one assist), Logan Chisholm (one goal, one assist), Aaron Brown (two assists), and Antonino Pugliese (two assists) had multi-point nights for the X-Men.

STFX outshot Saint Mary's 32-28 on the night, with Patrick Leaver stopping 24 shots for the win, while Ben West turned away 25 shots in defeat.

The X-Men win improves their record to 4-6-0-1 on the campaign. They'll be back on the road tomorrow night, visiting the Acadia Axemen (7-1-1-1) at 7 p.m. in Wolfville.

The Huskies loss drops their record to 7-4-0-0 on the season. Saint Mary's next action will come Friday, Nov. 14 as they visit the UPEI Panthers at 7 p.m. in Charlottetown.
