REDS hand Huskies first loss of campaign in Fredericton

FREDERICTON, NB - The U SPORTS #1 ranked UNB REDS handed the #6 ranked Saint Mary's Huskies their first loss of the 2025-2026 Atlantic University Sport men's hockey season on Friday, a 5-2 win over the previously unbeaten Huskies at the Aitken Centre in Fredericton.

REDS forward Jax Dubois scored twice, including the winner, earning Tim Horton's Player of the Game honours.

After a scoreless first period, Luke Torrance and Dubois scored 16 seconds apart in the second to put UNB ahead by a pair.

The Huskies responded with a pair of goals from the two leading scorers in the nation. 

First, Charlie Da Fonseca fed a pass to winger Reid Valade, who absolutely undressed REDS goaltender Remi Delafontaine on his way to his U SPORTS leading 9th goal of the campaign, cutting the REDS lead to 2-1.

Just over four minutes later, defenceman Connor Olson deked past a pair of REDS and delivered a perfect pass to forward Ben Allison, who unleashed a wicked one-timer for his eighth goal of th season, tying the game at 2-2.

Dubois' scored his second of the night mid-way through the third and Cole Huckins tacked on an insurance goal at the 13:04 mark.

Camaryn Baber's short-handed goal into an empty net rounded out the scoring.

Luca D'Amato had three assists for the REDS, while Justin Nolet assisted on a pair.

Remi Delafontaine made 23 saves on 25 shots to earn the win in the UNB net.

Marcus Vandenberg took the loss for the Huskies. He faced 42 shots, stopping 38.

With the win, the REDS are now 4-2-1-0 (W-L-OTL-SOL). The Huskies, who remain atop the AUS standings, are 6-1-0-0.

Both teams are back in action on Saturday. The REDS host the Acadia Axemen at 7 p.m. in Fredericton, while the Huskies travel to Charlottetown to take on the UPEI Panthers at 7 p.m.
