Nsoseme dominates as Huskies defeat Axemen 83-75

HALIFAX, NS – Saint Mary's forward Eliel Nsoseme had a dominant 23-point, 17-rebound double-double, leading the Huskies to a 83-75 win over the Acadia Axemen in Atlantic University Sport men's basketball action on Wednesday night at the Homburg Centre.

The Huskies started hot from deep, opening the game with back-to-back three-pointers from guard Tjark Lademacher (Lüneburg, Germany) and forward Jonah Crowther (Dartmouth, NS), opening up an early 6-2 lead. But the Axemen came storming back, as the two teams exchanged leads throughout the quarter, with Axemen guard Glen Cox (Scotsburn, NS) making a lay-up late to give the Axemen a 18-17 lead after the first.

The Huskies started the second quarter with five straight points off the bench from guard Devawn White (Montreal, QC), before forward Eliel Nsoseme (Kinshasa, DRC) begin his dominance of the game, as he recorded six points, six rebounds and two blocks in the frame.

Acadia continued to keep it tight, and took the lead off a three-pointer from guard Gabe Davignon (Whites Lake, NS) but Huskies guard Aidan MacDonald (Timberlea, NS) came off the bench to score four straight points, then set up a Nsoseme lay-in, as the Huskies took a 37-36 lead into half-time.

The third quarter saw Nsoseme continue to assert his presence inside, scoring four straight points to extend the Huskies lead, but Davignon responded with another three to tie the game at 41-41. Nsoseme scored eight points on a perfect 4/4 from the floor in the third quarter, but Acadia kept hanging around, with a late lay-in from Glen Cox cutting the Saint Mary's lead to 53-52 heading into the fourth quarter.

The Huskies opened up some distance early in the fourth quarter, starting on a 7-0 run including a three and steal and score from Aidan MacDonald, forcing an Axemen timeout. But Acadia responded accordingly, with guard Kyle Munro (Timberlea, NS) going on a quick 8-2 personal run, including back-to-back three-pointers, putting Acadia ahead 65-64.

After a lay-in and free-throw from Nsoseme, Huskies guard Jasha'jaun Downey (North Preston, NS) hit a clutch three to put the Huskies ahead 70-65.

A three-pointer from Axemen guard Ryan Regault (Scarborough, ON) cut it back to a four-point Huskies advantage, but Nsoseme responded with another put-back lay-in, before Downey, Diggs and Lademacher took care of business at the free-throw line, as the Huskies secured the 83-75 victory.

Eliel Nsoseme was named Player of the Game with a dominant stat-line of 23 points, 17 rebounds, eight assists, seven blocks and two steals. Jayrell Diggs added 16 points, five assists and four steals, while Jasha'jaun Downey and Devawn White each chipped in 11 points for the Huskies.

Acadia was led in defeat by Kyle Munro, who scored a game-high 24 points on 9/12 shooting from the field. Guard Ryan Regault added 13 points, six rebounds and six assists, while Gabe Davignon (11 points) and Briawne Wilson (10 points) also cracked double-digit scoring for the Axemen.

The Huskies win improved their record to 7-11 on the campaign, while the Axemen fall to 6-12, with Saint Mary's gaining some ground on the sixth and final playoff spot in the standings. The two teams will meet again on Saturday, Feb. 13, this time in Wolfville, with tip-off scheduled for 8 p.m.
