Nsoseme’s dominant double-double leads Huskies to OT win over Axemen

HALIFAX, NS – Saint Mary's forward Eliel Nsoseme scored a 31 point, 16 rebound double-double, including the game-winning put-back lay-in, leading the Huskies to a 98-95 win over the Acadia Axemen in the Atlantic University Sport Men's Basketball season opener on Wednesday night at the Homburg Centre in Halifax.

In his first game as a Husky, fifth year forward Eliel Nsoseme (Kinshasa, DRC) scored the first four points of the night, previewing what would be a dominant effort for the big man.

Back-to-back buckets for guard Tjark Lademacher (Luneburg, Germany) helped the Huskies open up an early 10-5 lead, but the Axemen responded with strong play from guard Glen Cox (Scotsburn, NS) and forward Marc Sidione Nkwitcheu (Yaounde, Cameroon). The Huskies bench provided a spark, with lay-ups from reserve guards Aidan MacDonald (Timberlea, NS) and Devawn White (Montreal, QC) giving the Huskies a 26-19 lead after 10 minutes of play.

The Axemen responded in the second quarter, with all-star guard Glen Cox scoring 12 of his 21 first half points. A Nsoseme three-point play restored the Huskies lead 29-27, but Cox continued to pace the Axemen in a high-scoring quarter. Huskies guard Jasha'jaun Downey (North Preston, NS) hit a jump shot to give the home team a 47-44 lead at the half.

Downey led the Huskies in the first half with 13 points, while Nsoseme chipped in 11 points and seven rebounds. Cox paced the Axemen with 21 first half points, while guard Ryan Regault (Scarborough, ON) added 12 points.

The third quarter saw the Huskies go on a run – after a three-pointer from Axemen guard Kyle Munro (Timberlea, NS) cut the lead to 49-47, Downey and Nsoseme scored 10 of the next 12 points, as the Huskies lead ballooned to 61-47. A Cox three-pointer ended the Huskies run, but Saint Mary's took a 69-57 lead into the fourth quarter.

In the fourth quarter, Acadia went on a run thanks to continued strong play from Ryan Regault and contributions from forward Erik Hayden (Truro, NS), cutting the lead to 75-70. Nsoseme responded with a dunk, and Kyle Munro hit a three-pointer to cut the lead to 81-80, but Huskies forward Jonah Crowther (Dartmouth, NS) hit a clutch three to extend the lead back to four.

But Acadia had another comeback left in the tank, as Cox hit a free-throw and Regault hit a three-pointer to tie the game at 84-84, forcing overtime.

Nsoseme continued his dominance in overtime, scoring four points and adding four rebounds. A Regualt three once again tied the game at 90-90, but Jasha'jaun Downey responded with a three of his own to restore the Huskies lead.

After a couple Huskies stops, Kyle Munro hit a jump shot to tie the game at 95-95, but Jasha'jaun Downey was fouled while shooting a three. Downey made the second free-throw, but the third missed directly into the hands of Nsoseme, who put back a lay-in to secure the 98-95 victory.

In his first game as a Husky, Eliel Nsoseme was dominant with 31 points and 16 rebounds. Downey scored at will, chipping in 25, while returning Huskies guards Jayrell Diggs (East Preston, NS) and Marc-Denault Gabriel (Montreal, QC) each chipped in 13 points, with Gabriel adding nine rebounds.

The Axemen were led by all-star guard Glen Cox, who had a monster 32-point, 14 rebound double-double. Ryan Regault poured in 27 off the bench in his AUS regular season debut, while Kyle Munro added 13.

The Huskies and Axemen will meet again on Saturday night in Wolfville, N.S., with tip-off scheduled for 8 p.m.
