Huskies to host annual Red Tape Game on Friday, Feb. 7

Saint Mary's University Department of Athletics and Recreation is proud to announce that we will be hosting our fourth annual Red Tape hockey game on Friday, February 7, 2025.

The Huskies Women's Hockey game vs. the St. Thomas Tommies on Feb. 7, will be the annual Red Tape event, with a pre-game reception and ceremonial puck-drop. This marks the fourth time in five years that Saint Mary's has hosted this event, with the exception being a COVID-19 cancellation in 2020-21.

The Red Tape event on campus raises awareness around racism in sport in support of former SMU student Logan Prosper of We'koqma'q First Nation. Prosper was on the receiving end of a racial slur during a minor hockey game in Cape Breton (or Unama'ki) in 2019. After that, he put red tape on his hockey stick as a visible reminder that such intolerance has no place in hockey and sport more broadly.

"We have an opportunity through sport to be a voice for change," says Scott Gray, Saint Mary's Director of Athletics & Recreation. "These Red Tape events and our other work with the McCain & McLean Centre will continue to demonstrate our shared commitment to being that voice."

This year's Red Tape event also occurs on the same day as an Indigenous Hockey Summit hosted by Mi'kmaw Kina'matnewey at the Mi'kmaq Friendship Centre, which will feature Huskies Women's Hockey forward Erin Denny as a panelist at the event. All attendees of the Indigenous Hockey Summit will be provded free tickets for the Huskies game.

Huskies fans are encouraged to come out and show their support for this important event. GET TICKETS NOW
