Allison scores pair in Huskies 5-3 win over Aigles Bleus

MONCTON, N.B. - Saint Mary's forward Ben Allison scored two goals, leading the Huskies to a 5-3 win over the league-leading Moncton Aigles Bleus in Atlantic University Sport men's hockey action on Friday night in Moncton, N.B.

The Aigles Bleus took an early lead with forward Justin Gendron scoring just over two minutes into the action to put the hosts ahead 1-0.

But Ben Allison responded with a pair of first period goals to put the Huskies ahead. First Allison was able to tip a shot from linemate Reid Valade into the Moncton goal, tying the game at 1-1, 4:54 into the first.

Nearly 13 minutes into the period, Allison stole the puck in the neutral zone and skated out on a breakaway, with a toe drag move to the forehand to beat Darveau and give the Huskies a 2-1 lead.

Moncton tied it up again 3:50 into the second period with a powerplay goal from Olivier Luc Hache. But the Huskies took the lead again, off a nice passing play between forwards Connor Trenholm, Derek Gentile and Liam Van Loon, with Van Loon scoring to give SMU a 3-2 lead at the 9:09 mark of the second.

In the third period, the Aigles Bleus equalized again, with a powerplay goal from Mika Cyr tying the game at 3-3, 7:20 into the period.

But late in the game, the Huskies got a powerplay opportunity and took the lead for good. After sustained pressure in the Moncton end, forward Will Chisholm played a crosscrease pass right to captain Charlie Da Fonseca, who made no mistake, scoring the game-winning goal with just 1:06 remaining in regulation.

Huskies forward Ben Boyd iced the game with an empty net goal at the 19:26 mark, securing the Huskies 5-3 victory.

The Aigles Bleus outshot the Huskies 36-25 on the night, with Marcus Vandenberg making 33 saves for the win, while Nathan Darveau stopped 20 shots for the Aigles Bleus.

The Huskies second straight win improves their record to 14-9-1-2 on the season, good for fourth place in the AUS.

The Aigles Bleus loss drops their record to 17-7-1-0, still leading the AUS. Moncton will visit the Dalhousie Tigers (1-21-1-1) on Saturday night at 7 p.m. in the Halifax Forum.
