Huskies cross country continues to show growth at Moncton Invitational
MONCTON, NB - The Saint Mary's Huskies continued their AUS Cross Country campaign at the Université de Moncton Invitational on October 4, tackling the 8km course in unseasonally warm conditions.
On the women's side, for the second straight meet, Frances MacLeod led the Huskies with a stellar 6th place finish in a time of 30:05, crossing the line just seconds behind the top five runners from StFX, Dalhousie, and Memorial. MacLeod's strong performance once again placed her among the AUS frontrunners, as she continues to build momentum heading toward the conference championships later this month.
Veterans Ashley Brady (36:14, 44th) and Mackenzie Hayduk (36:59, 47th) rounded out the Huskies' efforts in Moncton.
St. Francis Xavier claimed the women's team title with 27 points, followed by Dalhousie (39) and Memorial (59).
On the men's side, the Huskies earned a strong 4th place team finish, continuing their steady progress through the AUS season.
Second year athlete Brady Kyle led the Huskies with a sharp run of 27:29, placing 22nd overall. Close behind were teammates Elijah Ford (27:43, 24th), Zack Rogers (28:13, 27th), Zack Kennedy (28:15, 29th), and Cian Kelly (28:36, 35th), all finishing within a minute of each other to secure the Huskies a team total of 116 points. Rookies Greysen Tremble (28:45, 39th) and Connor MacGillivary (29:21, 44th) added key depth to the lineup.
St. Francis Xavier won the team title with a score of 23 points, followed by Dalhousie (51) and UPEI (92).
Head coach, Jonathan Peverill, was encouraged by the Huskies' performance:
"Frances ran with some of the best in the conference, and our men showed great pack running. This meet gives us a strong platform as we build toward the AUS Championships in three weeks' time."
The Huskies race next at the AUS Cross Country Championships, hosted by Acadia University, on October 25th.
