Freeman becomes U SPORTS leading scorer as Huskies defeat Mounties 6-0

SACKVILLE, N.B. - Saint Mary's forward Cara Freeman continued her torrid scoring pace with two goals and an assist, helping lead the Huskies to a 6-0 win over the Mount Allison Mounties in Atlantic University Sport women's soccer action on Saturday afternoon in Sackville, N.B.

In the opening minute, defender Áine O'Neil (New Ross, NS) played a long ball to speedy forward Virginia Boone (Halifax, NS), who beat out two defenders and took a touch around goalkeeper Audrey Squires, before depositing the opening goal of the night.

In the 28th minute, Boone's speed again created a goal scoring opportunity for the Huskies, as she was bearing away on a breakaway before being brought down by the Mounties keeper. A penalty kick was awarded, and Cara Freeman (Halifax, NS) calmly stepped to the spot and fired a shot into the bottom right corner to double the Huskies lead to 2-0.

The Huskies struck again just two minutes later, as Freeman took a throw-in pass and beat a defender before playing a well-timed through-ball to midfielder Charlotte Baines (Halifax, NS) who was once again able to score while sliding to the turf to extend the lead to 3-0 in the 31st minute.

Saint Mary's explosive offence continued to find first half success, as midfielder Julia Pasma (Georgetown, ON) added a spectacular goal in the 36th minute, as a loose ball bounced to her from 25-yards out and she one-hit a laser into the top right corner to extend the lead to 4-0.

The Huskies added to their lead in the second half, first off a Julia Pasma corner kick, which was deflected into the air by Charlotte Baines, and then off a Mounties defender, with the officials scoring it as an own goal to extend the visitors lead to 5-0 in the 57th minute.

Appropriately, Cara Freeman capped the Huskies phenomenal game with a goal in the 62nd minute, following up the rebound of a saved shot from Brooklyn Salgueiro (Dartmouth, NS) and deflecting it in for her second goal of the day.

Freeman was named Player of the Match with two goals and an assists. Through nine games played, Freeman now leads the AUS in goals (10) and points (14), with her 10 goals tying her as the top goal scorer in all of U SPORTS women's soccer.

Tatyana Olsen stopped three shots for the clean sheet, while Audrey Squires made five saves in defeat.

With the win, the Huskies improve to 4-3-2 on the season, currently ranking sixth in the AUS. They'll be back in action next weekend, visiting the UNB REDS (5-1-3) on Friday, Oct. 3 at 5 p.m. in Fredericton, N.B., before returning home to host the Moncton Aigles Bleues (2-6-1) on Sunday, Oct. 5 at 1 p.m. as part of Huskies Homecoming Weekend.
