Freeman scores again as Huskies tie REDS 1-1

HALIFAX, NS – Saint Mary's forward Cara Freeman scored the equalizer as the Huskies tied the UNB REDS 1-1 in Atlantic University Sport women's soccer action on Friday night at Huskies Stadium in Halifax, N.S.

The Huskies were able to generate some early scoring opportunities, but forwards Cara Freeman (Halifax, NS) and Jamie-Lynn Provo (Dartmouth, NS) were denied by goalkeeper Ava Henry (Baldwin, ON).

The REDS hit the scoresheet first, as in the 24th minute, midfielder Jillian Larose (Ottawa, ON) went on a run down the right wing, cutting inside and delivering a low-cross that was deflected by a defender right to UNB forward Lauren Clarke (Dartmouth, NS) who fired a shot past Huskies goalkeeper Tatyana Olsen (Winnipeg, MB) to make it 1-0.

But the Huskies equalized just over a minute later thanks to the heroics of Freeman, who took a pass from midfielder Charlotte Baines (Halifax, NS), and cut back, shedding a REDS defender before firing a wicked shot bar down top corner to tie it up at 1-1. Freeman's goal was her seventh in as many games, ranking second in the AUS and third in U SPORTS.

Both teams pushed for a go-ahead goal over the next 64 minutes, but neither team was able to break the deadlock, as Henry and Olsen both made several quality saves, and the game finished as a 1-1 draw.

Huskies forward Cara Freeman was named Player of the Game with a goal, and a fantastic work rate over 90 minutes in the midfield. Tatyana Olsen made six saves for the Huskies, while Ava Henry stopped four shots for the REDS.

The Huskies record stands at 2-3-2, while the REDS are 4-0-2. UNB continue their road trip to take on the Acadia Axewomen (4-2-0) on Sunday, Sept. 21 at 1 p.m., while the Huskies next face the UPEI Panthers (0-6-1) on Friday, Sept. 26 at 5:00 p.m. in Charlottetown, PEI.
