CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. – The UPEI Panthers defeated the Saint Mary's Huskies 3-1 in game one of the best-of-three Atlantic University Sport women's hockey quarterfinal series on Wednesday night at MacLauchlan Arena.
UPEI opened the scoring just over three minutes into the action with a five-on-three powerplay goal from defender Kali MacDonald (Charlottetown, PEI) who stuffed a rebound past Huskies netminder Sophie Scully (Ottawa, ON), 2:46 into the first period.
The Panthers outshot the Huskies 8-6 through the opening 20 minutes, and took a 1-0 lead into first intermission.
UPEI added to their lead with their second powerplay goal of the night, as forward Anjali Simms (Delta, BC) sent a puck towards goal that ricochetted of a Huskies defender's skate and past Scully to extend the host lead to 2-0, 7:21 into the second period.
Just over five minutes later, the Panthers made it 3-0, as forward Ashley McCutcheon (Kitchener, ON) skated through three defenders and lifted a shot over Scully's shoulder, giving UPEI a 3-0 lead, 12:29 into the second period.
The Panthers once again outshot the Huskies 9-8 in the second period, and took a 3-0 lead into second intermission.
Saint Mary's heavily outshot the Panthers in the third period, but were unable to beat goaltender Erin Cabaday (Oakville, ON), until the final minute of the game, when Huskies forward Keyara Nelson (Belleville, ON) was able to stuff a rebound into goal, cutting the final score to 3-1 for UPEI.

The Huskies outshot the Panthers 30-23 on the night, but UPEI goaltender Erin Cabaday was stellar, turning away 29/30 shots faced, while Sophie Scully made 20 saves in defeat.
The quarterfinal series now shifts to Halifax, where the Huskies will host the Panthers for game two on Friday, Feb. 20 at 7 p.m. at the Dauphinee Centre. If the Huskies are able to tie the series up, the series will shift back to Charlottetown for a decisive game three, Sunday, Feb. 22 at 7 p.m. at MacLauchlan Arena.
