Huskies defeat Aigles Bleues 4-2 for second straight win

MONCTON, N.B. - Saint Mary's goaltender Sophie Scully stopped 27 shots, backstopping the Huskies to their second straight win as they defeated the Moncton Aigles Bleues 4-2 in Atlantic University Sport women's hockey action on Sunday afternoon at J. Louis Levesque Arena in Moncton, NB.

The Huskies opened the scoring less than two minutes into the action, with forward Mia Faseruk (Winnipeg, MB) passing it ahead to Avery Cant (Waterloo, ON), who made a sweet move to the backhand and beat Aigles Bleues goaltender Molly Collin (St-Lin Laurentides, QC), giving SMU a 1-0 lead.

Moncton was able to equalize with a powerplay goal midway through the period, as forward Valerie Hache (Shippagan, NB) skated down the left wing and cut in on goal before sliding a pass back to Erica Plourde (Pigeon Hill, NB) who beat Huskies netminder Sophie Scully with a high shot, tying the game at 1-1, 10:18 into the period.

The Huskies outshot the Aigles Bleues 11-9 in the opening period, and took a 1-0 lead into first intermission.

Saint Mary's took the lead back just over three minutes into the second period, with forward Charlotte Buffie (Winnipeg, MB) intercepting a pass in the neutral zone and breaking out on a two-on-one with forward Kylie Kerr (Milton, ON), who received Buffie's pass and snapped a high shot to put the visitors ahead 2-1, 3:33 into the second.

The Aigles Bleues outshot the Huskies 15-6 in the second period, but Sophie Scully was outstanding, turning away all 15 shots she faced, and Saint Mary's took a 2-1 lead into second intermission.

Midway through the period, the Huskies added to their lead with defender Abigail MacKenzie (Stellarton, NS) firing a sharp angle shot to put SMU ahead 3-1.

But the Aigles Bleues responded just over a minute later, courtesy a powerplay goal from forward Amelie Vachon (Ste-Blaise sur Richelieu, QC), cutting the Huskies advantage to 3-2, 11:44 into the third.

Saint Mary's restored their two goal lead just 30 seconds later, with forward Kara MacLean (Antigonish, NS) taking a pass from MacKenzie and beating Collin with a top corner wrist shot, giving the Huskies a 4-2 lead.

Moncton outshot Saint Mary's 29-26 for the game, with Sophie Scully turning away 27 shots for the win, while Molly Collin made 22 saves in defeat.
