Buffie scores pair in Huskies 5-2 win over Panthers

CHARLOTTETOWN, PEI - Saint Mary's forward Charlotte Buffie scored two goals, and goaltender Sophie Scully stopped 35 shots, helping lead the Huskies to a 5-2 win over the UPEI Panthers in Atlantic University Sport women's hockey action on Saturday afternoon at MacLauchlan Arena in Charlottetown, P.E.I.

The Huskies opened the scoring late in the first period, as forward Mia Faseruk (Winnipeg, MB) sent a harmless looking shot towards goal, but it took a funny bounce that fooled Panthers goaltender Erin Cabaday (Oakville, ON) to open the scoring, 1-0, 14:58 into the first.

The Panthers outshot the Huskies 13-9 through the opening period, but it was the visitors who took a 1-0 lead into intermission.

Midway through the period, the Huskies doubled their lead, as forward Kara MacLean (Antigonish, NS) made a sweet deke past a Panthers defender before her initial shot was stopped by Cabaday, but Keyara Nelson (Belleville, ON) followed up the rebound with a goal, making it 2-0 Huskies.

The Panthers got one back just over a minute later, with a goal from forward Kierra St. Peter (Craig Flats, NB) cutting the Huskies lead to 2-1. But Saint Mary's restore the two goal lead three minutes later, with forward Charlotte Buffie (Winnipeg, MB) navigating through a crowd of UPEI defenders before sliding a backhand shot past Cabaday to make it 3-1 Huskies.

Once again, UPEI outshot the Huskies 17-10 through the second period, but Saint Mary's goaltender Sophie Scully (Ottawa, ON) was excellent, stopping 29 of the first 30 shots she faced, and the Huskies took a 3-1 lead into second intermission.

The Huskies opened the third period on an extended powerplay and took advantage, scoring two powerplay goals. First, on a five-on-three advantage, Kara MacLean dished a cross-ice pass to Avery Cant (Waterloo, ON) who beat Cabaday with a high shot to extend the lead to 4-1, 46 seconds into the third period.

Less than a minute later, the Huskies powerplay struck again, with Charlotte Buffie jumping on a loose puck in front for her second goal of the night, putting the Huskies ahead 5-1.

The Panthers got a late goal back from forward Brooke Henderson (Halifax, NS) - who re-took the AUS goal scoring lead, scoring her 12th of the campaign, minutes after Avery Cant had tied her atop the leaderboard with her 11th - but the Huskies held on for a 5-2 victory.

UPEI outshot Saint Mary's 37-34 on the night, but Sophie Scully was excellent, stopping 35 shots for the win, while Erin Cabaday stopped 29 shots in defeat.

With the win, the Huskies improve to 8-8-0-3 on the season - currently seventh place in the AUS standings - Saint Mary's will be back in action on Sunday, Jan. 18, visiting the Moncton Aigles Bleues (10-7-2-0) at 3 p.m.

The Panthers loss drops their record to 10-8-2-0 - currently fifth place in the AUS standings - UPEI will be back on home ice on Wednesday, Jan. 21, as they host the league-leading UNB REDS (15-4-0-1) at 7 p.m.
