REDS defeat Huskies 5-3 in Fredericton

FREDERICTON, NB - The UNB REDS scored four first period goals on route to a 5-3 victory over the Saint Mary's Huskies in Atlantic University Sport women's hockey, Saturday afternoon at UNB's Aitken Centre.

Olivia Eustace was in on every goal, scoring once and added four assists to lead the REDS. She was named Tim Horton's Player of the Game.

Just 3:09 in, Eustace earned her first point of the day, drawing an assist on Hailey Jackson's first goal of the season.

Jackson pounced on a rebound in front of Huskies' goalie Sophie Scully and fired the puck into an open side of the net to give the home team the early lead.

Eustace then assisted on goals by Payton Hargreaves and Keira Grant, her first career AUS goal, before scoring one of her own, on the power-play, at 14:58.

The two teams skated through a scoreless second before Saint Mary's tried to make a game of it, scoring twice, in the third.

The Huskies' goals were interrupted by Robyn Brokenshire's goal, assisted by Eustace, which created the two-goal margin of victory.

Hannah LeClair made 22 saves on 25 shots to earn the win in the UNB net.

Scully faced 29 shots and made 24 saves.

Kara MacLean, Leslie Cuddihy, and Avery Cant scored goals for the Huskies.

With the win, the REDS are now 2-1-0-0 (W-L-OTL-SOL). Saint Mary's is 1-2-0-0.

Next up for the REDS a Friday night home ice tilt against cross-campus rivals St. Thomas. That game is scheduled for a 7:00pm start.  The Huskies visit Dalhousie at the same time.
