Huskies defeat Capers 69-55 to improve to 16-0

SYDNEY, NS - Saint Mary's forward Lucina Beaumont scored 22 points, leading the U SPORTS #2 ranked Huskies to a 69-55 win over the Cape Breton Capers in Atlantic University Sport women's basketball action on Friday night at the Sullivan Fieldhouse in Sydney, N.S.

In the opening minutes, the Huskies transition and inside play opened up an early lead, with the Huskies first six field goals coming inside the paint, including lay-ins from forwards Chloe Wilson (Dartmouth, NS) and Lucina Beaumont (Fredericton, NB).

Fifth year forward Katelyn Power (Bayside, NS) came off the Huskies bench to make a huge impact in the first quarter, scoring five points including back-to-back lay-ins, as the Huskies opened up a 20-11 lead after the first quarter.

The second quarter saw forward Marlo Steenbakkers (Ottawa, ON) come off the bench to make back-to-back three pointers, as the Huskies lead grew to 27-14. After a Chloe Wilson three-pointer, another big block from Steenbakkers led to a fast-break lay-in from Clara Gascoigne (Dartmouth, NS), giving the Huskies a 36-18 lead at the half.

The Capers started to break down the Huskies strong defence in the third quarter, cutting the lead to 36-22, before forward Evie Hargraves (Saint John, NB) hit a three-pointer to push the lead back to 20 points.

Several minutes later, Katelyn Power continued her fantastic play with a steal and highlight worthy behind-the-back pass to Lucy Beaumont who finished the lay-in to grow the lead to 47-25.

The Capers responded with a 7-0 run, but a lay-in from guard Aki Kobayashi (Osaka, Japan) and another jumper from Katelyn Power gave the Huskies a 51-36 lead after three quarters of play.

The fourth quarter saw the Capers continue to cut into the lead, with a three-pointer from forward Kiyara Letlow (Toronto, ON) cutting the lead to 10, 53-43 with 6:43 remaining.

But the Huskies responded with a 5-0 run, as a block by Chloe Wilson led to a Clara Gascoigne lay-up, followed by a Marlo Steenbakkers three-pointer, extending the Huskies lead to 58-43.

The Capers cut into the Huskies lead again, 65-53 with just over two minutes remaining, but a Clara Gascoigne three-pointer was the dagger, as the Huskies held on for the 69-55 victory.

Lucina Beaumont led the charge for the Huskies with 22 points, seven rebounds and two steals. Clara Gascoigne added 15 points, six rebounds, three assists and two steals, while fifth year forwards Marlo Steenbakkers (11 points, three rebounds, three assists, two blocks and one steal) and Katelyn Power (seven points, five rebounds, one assist, two steals, one block) stuffed the stat-sheet off the Huskies bench.

The Capers were led by a Kiyara Letlow double-double of 21 points and 17 rebounds, while guards Chermensa Van la Parra and Alicia Bowering both contributed nine points and three assists.

The Huskies win improves their record to a league-leading 16-0 on the season. Saint Mary's are back in action on Saturday, Feb. 8, visiting the STFX X-Women (7-8) at 6 p.m. in Antigonish, N.S.

The Capers loss drops their record to 8-9 on the season, fifth in the AUS standings. Cape Breton will be back on home court next weekend, hosting the Dalhousie Tigers (2-14) on Friday, Feb. 14 and Saturday, Feb. 15, with both games tipping off at 6 p.m.
