Huskies dominate fourth quarter in 74-50 win over Sea-Hawks

HALIFAX, NS – The Saint Mary's Huskies defeated the Memorial Sea-Hawks 74-50 in Atlantic University Sport Women's Basketball action on Friday night at the Homburg Centre in Halifax.

Despite the final score, the game was much closer for the first three quarters, but the Huskies outscored the Sea-Hawks 24-6 over the final 10 minutes to improve to 3-0 on the campaign.

The Huskies opened up an early 5-0 lead off a lay-in from guard Clara Gascoigne (Dartmouth, NS), but Memorial responded with a lay-in from forward Carly Norris (Middle Cove, NL) giving them an 8-7 lead midway through the quarter. The Huskies got good contributions from their bench, with a steal and lay-in from forward Katelyn Power (Bayside, NS) and a three-pointer from guard Julia Black (Halifax, NS) extending their lead to 14-7.

But Sea-Hawks guard Alyssa Jenkins (St. John's, NL) responded with a personal 6-0 scoring run to end the quarter, and the Huskies took a 18-17 lead into the second.

Saint Mary's continued their strong play in the second quarter, with a lay-in by Aki Kobayashi (Osaka, Japan) giving the Huskies their largest lead of the first half, 34-24, but Memorial responded with back-to-back lay-ins from forward Brooklyn Martens (Caronport, SK) and guard Laura Murray (St. John's, NL), and the Huskies took a 34-28 lead into half.

Both teams struggled from the field in the first half, with the Huskies shooting 14/44 (32%) while the Sea-Hawks shot 10/37 (27%). Offensive rebounding was the Huskies strength through the first 20 minutes, as they hauled in 13 offensive rebounds, converting 12 second chance points.

The Huskies were led in the opening half by Clara Gascoigne's seven points, while Brooklyn  Martens led the Sea-Hawks with eight points and six rebounds.

The Huskies opened up a lead early in the third quarter, with a three-pointer from Aliyah Fraser (New Glasgow, NS) and a lay-in from Chloe Wilson (Dartmouth, NS), but Sea-Hawks responded with an 10-0 run, with a lay-in from guard Serena Phillips (St. John's, NL) giving them a 40-39 lead.

The back-and-forth play continued throughout the third quarter before a Katelyn Power steal and score gave the Huskies a 50-44 lead heading into the final quarter.

The opening moments of the fourth quarter saw a Kobayashi lay-in answered by a Brooke LeDevehat (Mount Pearl, NL) three-pointer, cutting the Huskies lead to 52-47. But that was as close as the Sea-Hawks would get, as the Huskies fourth quarter dominance saw them go on a 22-0 run over the next eight minutes, highlighted by seven points from Clara Gascoigne, and contributions from young reserves Julia Black, Evie Hargraves (Saint John, NB) and Molly Healy (St. John's, NL). The Sea-Hawks scored three late points, but the Huskies came away with a commanding 74-50 win.

Huskies forward Katelyn Power was named Player of the Game, stuffing the stat sheet with eight points, seven rebounds, three blocks and two steals. Clara Gascoigne scored a game-high 16 points and added five rebounds, while Lucina Beaumont chipped in nine points and a game-high 18 rebounds.
