Mercer leads Huskies to 3-1 win over Mounties

SACKVILLE, N.B. - Three different Huskies hit the scoresheet - including a goal and assist from Colby Mercer, and the first career AUS goals for Mubarak Salawu and Jima Majok - as Saint Mary's defeated the Mount Allison Mounties 3-1 in Atlantic University Sport men's soccer action on Saturday night in Sackville, N.B.

It was a chippy and defensive focused first half, with the Huskies drawing two yellow cards, and generating eight shots on goal, but they were unable to beat Mounties keeper Rhys Chambers through the opening 45 minutes.

On the other side, Mount Allison fired off six first half shots, but were unable to break through until the third minute of first half added time, when a free-kick riccocheted for several seconds in the box, before being knocked in by Carter Allison, giving them a 1-0 lead heading into halftime.

The Huskies started the second half motivated, generating several quick scoring opportunities. In the 52nd minute, midfielder Jake Wilcox (Halifax, NS) played a nice pass to an open Jalen Loague (London, ON), who faked a defender and fired a strong shot that was turned away by Chambers, but Colby Mercer (Beaverbank, NS) jumped on the rebound and scored to tie his former team at 1-1.

Saint Mary's would take the lead just three minutes later, as a corner kick from midfielder Lachlan Sylvester (Hackett's Cove, NS) ricochetted around the box before being deflected out to defender Mubarak Salawu (Osogbo, Nigeria) who volleyed a left-footed rocket from 20 yards away, that curled in the far post for a stunner of a goal, giving the Huskies a 2-1 lead in the 55th minute.

With the Mounties trailing, the chippiness of the match escalated to a different level, with the official awarding three yellows and a red card to goalkeeper Rhys Chambers in the second half. After Chambers levelled Huskies striker Will Brown (Halifax, NS) with a yellow, he was shown a red card, and on the ensuing penalty kick, Huskies defender Jima Majok (Nairobi, Kenya) made no mistake, scoring his first career AUS goal and securing the 3-1 Huskies victory.

Colby Mercer was named Player of the Match with one goal and one assist against his former side, bringing his total to three goals and one assist on the season.

Freeman was named Player of the Match with two goals and an assists. Through nine games played, Freeman now leads the AUS in goals (10) and points (14), with her 10 goals tying her as the top goal scorer in all of U SPORTS women's soccer.

Huskies keeper Logan Briand stopped three shots for the win, while Rhys Chambers made six saves in defeat.

With the win, the Huskies improve to 3-6-0 on the season, currently ranking eighth in the AUS. They'll be back in action next weekend, visiting the UNB REDS (5-3-1) on Friday, Oct. 3 at 7:30 p.m. in Fredericton, N.B., before returning home to host the Moncton Aigles Bleus (5-3-1) on Sunday, Oct. 5 at 1:30 p.m. as part of Huskies Homecoming Weekend.
