Aigles Bleus defeat Huskies 4-2

HALIFAX, NS – Moncton forwards Charles-Edouard Drouin and Mika Cyr each scored a pair of goals, leading the Aigles Bleus to a 4-2 win over the the Saint Mary's Huskies in Atlantic University Sport men's hockey action on Saturday night at the Dauphinee Centre in Halifax.

The Aigles Bleus opened the scoring just 35 seconds into the action, as of a face-off in front of the Huskies net, forward Jeremy D'Astous (St-Eugène de Ladriere, QC) slid a pass over to captain Mika Cyr (Sainte-Anne, NB), who deked past Huskies goaltender Ben West (Barrie, ON) to put the visitors ahead 1-0 early.

The Huskies answered back several minutes later, with forward Ben Allison (Halifax, NS) carrying the puck into the Moncton zone and playing a pass back to linemate Reid Valade (Caledon, ON), who fired a shot wide, but Allison was able to stretch out to corral the rebound and lift it over the pad of Aigles Bleus netminder Nathan Darveau (Rouyn-Noranda, QC) to tie the game at 1-1, 5:16 into the first period.

But the Aigles Bleus continued their hot start, with forward Charles-Edouard Drouin (Saint-Georges, QC) scoring a pair of goals at the 5:27 mark and 8:44 mark of the period to put the visitors ahead 3-1, and leading the Huskies to change goaltenders, replacing Ben West with first year Marcus Vandenberg (Dorchester, ON).

Saint Mary's pushed to cut into the Moncton lead, including a couple more great scoring chances for Ben Allison, but Darveau turned them away. The Huskies outshot the Aigles Bleus 13-11 through the opening period, but it was the visitors who took a 3-1 lead into first intermission.

In the second period, Saint Mary's got a five-minute powerplay opportunity and cut into the lead, with forward Ben Boyd (Dartmouth, NS) getting a tip on a point shot from Ben Allison for a powerplay goal, cutting the lead to 3-2, 14:29 remaining in the period.

The Huskies outshot the Aigles Bleus 12-9 in the second period, but Darveau continued his solid play, and Moncton took a 3-2 lead into second intermission.

The third period was a chippy affair, with a combined 56 minutes of penalties dolled out between the two teams. Both goaltenders were solid, and with under a minute remaining, Mika Cyr iced the game with an empty net goal, securing the Aigles Bleus 4-2 win.
