Six Huskies selected to participate in 2026 U SPORTS East-West Bowl

Six members of the Saint Mary's Huskies football team - defensive back Onochie Amuta, offensive lineman Jackob Branton, defensive lineman Jahmari Brown, kicker Adam Johnston, receiver Chandler Zinck-Marier, and defensive backs coach Jermaine Gabriel - have been selected to participate in the 2026 U SPORTS East-West Bowl, scheduled to be played May 9 in Waterloo, ON.

Onochie Amuta, a third year defensive back out of Scarborough, ON, appeared in nine regular season and playoff games in 2025, recording 24.5 total tackles, two interceptions returned for 55 yards and one touchdown, 2.5 tackles for loss, one sack and two pass breakups. Over three seasons with the Huskies, Amuta has appeared in 23 games, recording 41.0 tackles, two interceptions returned for 55 yards and one touchdown, 3.5 tackles for loss, one sack, and four pass breakups.

Jackob Branton, a third year offensive lineman out of Gander, NL, started all nine regular season and playoff games in 2025, and was named an AUS All-Star at tackle. Over three seasons with the Huskies, Branton has started 25 games and was named the 2023-24 Saint Mary's Male Rookie of the Year, and Huskies Football Rookie of the Year.

Jahmari Brown, a third year defensive lineman out of Oshawa, ON, was named a 2025 AUS All-Star at defensive end. Brown started all nine regular season and playoff games in 2025, recording 9.5 tackles, four sacks, 5.5 tackles for loss, two forced fumbles, a fumble recovery returned for 48 yards, and a pass break-up. Over three seasons with the Huskies, Brown has recorded 17.0 tackles, four sacks, 6.5 tackles for loss, two forced fumbles, one fumble recovery and two pass breakups.

Adam Johnston, a fourth year kicker out of Rothesay, N.B., was named a 2025 AUS All-Star at kicker. Over nine regular season and playoff games in 2025, Johnston led the AUS with 65 points, making 11/13 FG, 32/32 extra points, leading the AUS in both categories. After beginning his Huskies career as a running back, Johnston has started as kicker for the past two seasons, recording 122 points, making 27/32 FG, and 44/44 extra points.

Chandler Zinck-Marier, a third year receiver from Pleasantville, N.S., was named a 2025 U SPORTS Second Team All-Canadian and AUS All-Star at returner. Across nine regular season and playoff games combined, Zinck-Marier averaged 144.1 all-purpose yards per game, the most for a Huskies player since 2017. On offence, Zinck-Marier caught 23 passes for 335 yards and three touchdowns, and took seven carries for 42 yards. As a returner, Zinck-Marier returned 11 kicks for 308 yards, with his 28.0 yards per kick return average leading the AUS and ranking third in U SPORTS, and returned 37 punts for 428 yards for an average of 11.6 yards per return, leading the AUS in all three categories, and ranking fourth in U SPORTS in punt return yards. After football season, Chandler joined the Huskies track & field team and thrived, winning a silver medal at the AUS Championships in the 60 metre dash, posting an elite personal best time of 6.95 seconds, and anchoring a bronze medal in the 4x200m relay. He was named 2025-26 Saint Mary's Male Athlete of the Year.

The five Saint Mary's student-athletes are joined by Jermaine Gabriel, Huskies defensive backs coach. Gabriel joined the Saint Mary's coaching staff in April 2023, after a nine-year CFL career, including winning the Grey Cup in 2017 with the Toronto Argonauts. Since joining the Huskies, Gabriel has coached seven AUS All-Stars defensive backs (Logan Mendes 2x, Jassin States-McClean 2x, Ryan Butler, Kallon Edwards & Max Van Nieuwkoop), two U SPORTS All-Canadians (States-McClean, Butler) and coached a 2025 Huskies defence that led all of U SPORTS with 13 interceptions, 69 points allowd, 10 safeties, and ranked second in the country in both passing yards allowed (180.5) and total yards allowed (282.5) per game.
