Huskies trounce Gaiters 50-7 in Lennoxville

LENNOXVILLE, QC - The Saint Mary's Huskies dominated the Bishop's Gaiters from start-to-finish, defeating them 50-7 in Atlantic University Sport football action on Saturday afternoon at Coulter Field in Lennoxville, QC.

The game began as a battle of field position, as both teams punted it away on the opening three drives. On the Gaiters second drive, Huskies linebacker Isaiah Okoli (Surrey, BC) stripped the Gaiters running back, with defensive tackle Cam Buchanan (Brampton, ON) recovering to force the turnover.

The Huskies took over from the Gaiters 46-yard line and instantly made them pay, as quarterback Justin Shibley (Ottawa, ON) aired it out for receiver Cherokee Robinson (Halifax, NS) for a 46-yard touchdown score, with Adam Johnston hitting the PAT to give the Huskies an early 7-0 lead.

Saint Mary's defence continued to dominate, forcing another Gaiters two-and-out punt. On the ensuing drive, Shibley and the Huskies were able to push the ball into Gaiters territory, thanks to a nice Shibley scramble and a pair of completions to Joshua Jack (Brampton, ON). But the Gaiters defence made a big play, as defensive back Felix LaFleur intercepted Shibley in the end zone, halting the scoring drive. The first quarter ended with the Huskies up 7-0.

Another Gaiters two-and-out saw the Huskies take control again, quickly moving the ball downfield thanks to some good rushing from Liam Legge (Stewiacke, NS) and a pair of completions to receivers Aidan Keefe (Rothesay, NB) and Chandler Zinck-Marier (Pleasantville, NS). That set up Malik Williams (Ajax, ON) to hammer it home from two-yards out for his league-leading 10th rushing touchdown of the campaign, with Johnston's extra point making it 14-0.

A big special teams tackle off the kickoff trapped the Gaiters deep in their zone, where they conceded a safety to extend the Huskies lead to 16-0. The Huskies got the ball back and quickly capitalized, with Shibley finding Chandler Zinck-Marier who turned on the jets and sprinted 67-yards to the house for a touchdown, with Johnston's extra point making it 23-0.

The Huskies dominance continued as defensive end Jahmari Brown (Oshawa, ON) got to Gaiters quarterback Justin Quiron, forcing a fumble which was recovered by the Gaiters in the end zone for another safety, extending the lead to 25-0 midway through the second quarter.

Bishop's continued searching for answers but weren't able to crack the Huskies defence, including a big pass break up by defensive back Logan Mendes (Quispamsis, NB) and the visitors took a commanding 25-0 lead into halftime.

The Huskies picked up in the second half right where they left off, forcing another Gaiters two-and-out punt. On the next drive, Huskies running back Liam Legge took two carries for 11 combined yards, before breaking out on a jaw-dropping 45-yard touchdown run, finishing it off with a punishing stiff-arm to extend the lead to 32-0.

Saint Mary's defence continued to dominate, with defensive lineman Westley Johnsen-MacDuff (Edmonton, AB) making a big tackle for a loss to force another Gaiters punt. The Huskies got it back and continued their efficient offence, with Shibley finding Joshua Jack (Brampton, ON) for a 29-yard touchdown to put them ahead 39-0.

The Huskies forced another Gaiters safety, before the Gaiters finally snapped their scoring drought, with Justin Quirion hitting receiver Joey Julien for a 24-yard touchdown to cut the lead to 41-7.

Saint Mary's put in their second string, but the Gaiters still couldn't solve the puzzle, conceding another safety, and letting running back Reece Wyke (Winnipeg, MB) churn out several first downs before quarterback Allan Young (Halifax, NS) iced the game with a 28-yard touchdown pass to Aidan Keefe (Rothesay, NB), securing the 50-7 victory.

Chandler Zinck-Marier was named Player of the Game for the Huskies, netting 203 all-purpose yards and a touchdown. Zinck-Marier's 1027 all-purpose yards through seven games leads the AUS and ranks fourth in U SPORTS.

Justin Shibley completed 15/21 passes for 256 yards and three touchdowns, while Allan Young completed his only attempt for a 28-yard touchdown. Leading the air attack were receivers Chandler Zinck-Marier (four catches for 103 yards and a touchdown), Cherokee Robinson (three cayches for 60 yards and a touchdown), Joshua Jack (four catches for 53 yards and a touchdown) and Aidan Keefe (two catches for 40 yards and a touchdown). The Huskies rush attack also dominated with the running back trio of Liam Legge (11 rushes for 101 yards and a touchdown), Reece Wyke (13 rushes for 57 yards) and Malik Williams (nine rushes for 24 yards and a touchdown) combining for 186 rushing yards and two touchdowns.

Defensively the Huskies were led by captain Isaiah Okoli with 5.0 tackles and a forced fumble, while Jahmari Brown chipped in 1.5 tackles, one sack and a forced fumble. Adam Johnston was perfect on extra points, making all six attempts on the day and improving to 29/29 on the season.

With the win, the Huskies improve to 6-1 on the season, clinching home field advantage for at least the AUS Semifinal. The Huskies will head into a bye, before finishing the regular season on home turf as they host the STFX X-Men (4-2) on Friday, Oct. 24 at Huskies Stadium. Not only will that game determine the AUS top seed and home playoff advantage, but it will be Senior Night as we honour several graduating Huskies players before their final regular season game.
