Huskies defence dominates in 41-3 win over Mounties
HALIFAX, NS – The Saint Mary's defence posted another dominant performance, holding Mount Allison's offence to 249 total yards and forcing three turnovers, as the Huskies defeated the Mounties 41-3 in Atlantic University Sport football action on Friday night at Huskies Stadium.
It was a memorable night at Huskies Stadium, as Saint Mary's improved to 5-1 on the season in front of 1,944 fans to kick-off the Huskies Homecoming weekend celebrations.
Saint Mary's receiver Chandler Zinck-Marier (Pleasantville, NS) returned the opening kickoff for 37-yards, but the Mounties defence was able to force a Huskies three-and-out.
Mount Allison took over, but the Huskies quickly regained possession thanks to an interception from defensive back Ryan Butler (Mississauga, ON), who picked off Mounties quarterback Spencer Joudry (Rothesay, NB), giving the Huskies good field position from the Mounties 30-yard line.

The Huskies offence wasn't able to get much further on that drive, but earned three points thanks to a 35-yard field goal from kicker Adam Johnston (Rothesay, NB).

After a Mounties three-and-out, the Huskies took over and found some offensive momentum. First a 14-yard rush by running back Liam Legge (Stewiacke, NS), followed by back-to-back completions from quarterback Allan Young (Halifax, NS) to receivers Kade Smith (Halifax, NS) and Joshua Jack (Brampton, ON) to bring the Huskies into Mounties territory.

That's when Young connected with Kade Smith again for a 36-yard completion, setting up Malik Williams (Ajax, ON) for a one-yard touchdown plunge, with Johnston's point after extending the Huskies lead to 10-0 at the end of the first quarter.

Early in the second quarter the Huskies added to their lead. After Young completed a trio of passes to receivers Trydell Mintis (Halifax, NS), Chandler Zinck-Marier and Joshua Jack to move deep into Mounties territory, he went back to Mintis for a seven yard touchdown score, with Johnston's PAT extending the lead to 17-0.

Saint Mary's defence made a couple of big plays on the ensuing drive, with defensive lineman Cam Buchanan (Brampton, ON) getting to Joudry for the sack. On the very next play, linebacker Isaiah Okoli (Surrey, BC) got into the backfield and stripped Joudry, with Buchanan recovering the fumble to give the Huskies possession.

After a nice 15-yard completion to receiver Cherokee Robinson (Halifax, NS), the Huskies went right back to their goal line hammer, as Malik Williams scored on a one-yard rush, for his second touchdown of the night and league-leading ninth score of the season, with Johnston's PAT extending the lead to 24-0.

Late in the quarter, the Mounties defence made a big play of their own, as defensive back Kirk Jean-Baptiste (Ottawa, ON) picked off Allan Young for the interception. But it was the Huskies who took a 24-0 lead into halftime.
On the opening kick-off of the second half, Johnston boomed it into the Mounties end zone, scoring a single point to extend the lead to 25-0.
After both teams punted, the Mounties got on the scoreboard after a big play with Joudry completing a pass to receiver Jonathan Desrochers (Fredericton, NB) for a 42-yard gain, before kicker Graeme Maither (Hinchinbrooke, QC) hit an 18-yard field goal to cut the score to 25-3.
On the ensuing drive, the Huskies were driving with completions to Mintis, Zinck-Marier and Robinson, but Mounties defensive back Samuel Lecker-Evans (Stillwater Lake, NS) picked off Young to end the threat.
Early in the fourth quarter, the Huskies answered by forcing a turnover of their own, as Ryan Butler picked off Joudry for his second interception of the night, and league leading sixth interception of the season.

But on the ensuing drive, Young threw his third interception of the night, being picked off by Mounties defensive back Chase Martin (Stillwater Lake, NS), deep in Mounties territory. Luckily for the Huskies, that turned into points, as defensive back Onochie Amuta (Scarborough, ON) got into the Mounties backfield and forced a safety, extending the lead to 27-3.

Saint Mary's was able to put together a nice drive, with running back Reece Wyke (Winnipeg, MB) handling the running game. On a play where it looked like Young was destined to be sacked, he threw up a prayer that was brought in by Trydell Mintis for a 29-yard gain.

That set up another Huskies touchdown, as Young connected with Chandler Zinck-Marier, who made a defender miss on his way to a 12-yard touchdown reception, with another Johnston PAT extending the lead to 34-3.

Saint Mary's would add one more touchdown to the lead late, as Young connected with Cherokee Robinson for a 10-yard touchdown, putting the finishing touches on the Huskies 41-3 victory.

The Huskies defence was dominant, holding the Mounties to just 249 total yards, including just 80 yards through the air. Cam Buchanan was named Player of the Game with two tackles, a sack, and a fumble recovery, while defensive captains Ryan Butler (1.5 tackles and two interceptions) and Isaiah Okoli (5.0 tackles and a forced fumble) also made big plays.
Offensively, Allan Young completed 20/32 passes for 276 yards and three touchdowns, but did throw three interceptions. A trio of receivers led the way with Cherokee Robinson (60 yards), Chandler Zinck-Marier (53 yards) and Trydell Mintis (52 yards) each catching four receptions including a touchdown.
The Huskies rushing attack went for a combined 190 yards, with Malik Williams leading the way with 10 rushes for 75 yards and two touchdowns, while Liam Legge (four rushes for 44 yards), Reece Wyke (seven rushes for 39 yards) and Nicholas Park (six rushes for 19 yards) also chipped in on the ground game. On special teams, Adam Johnston was automatic, scoring eight points on 5/5 extra points and a 27-yard field goal.
The Mounties were led by running back Owen Istace, who ran 14 times for 68 yards, and added a nine yard reception. Spencer Joudry completed seven of 14 passes, and was intercepted twice. Defensively, Mount Allison was led by Rylan Macumber (7.0 tackles) and Owen O'Neal (6.5 tackles), while Kirk Jean-Baptiste, Samuel Lecker-Evans and Chase Martin each intercepted a pass.
The Huskies win improves their record to 5-1 on the season, good for first place in the AUS standings. Saint Mary's will hit the road next weekend to take on the Bishop's Gaiters (4-1) on Saturday, Oct. 11 at 2 p.m. in Lennoxville, Quebec, before returning to home field to finish off the regular season on Friday, Oct. 24, as they host the STFX X-Men. The Mounties loss drops their record to 0-5 on the campaign. Mount Allison will be back on home turf next weekend, taking on the STFX X-Men (4-1) on Saturday, Oct. 11 at 2 p.m. in Sackville, N.B.
