Shibley, Edwards lead Huskies to 46-7 win over Mounties

SACKVILLE, NB – Saint Mary's quarterback Justin Shibley orchestrated a dominant offensive performance, completing 18/25 passes for 385 yards and two touchdowns, as the Huskies defeated the Mount Allison Mounties 46-7 in Atlantic University Sport football action on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field in Sackville, N.B.

After the Mounties started the game with a three-and-out punt, the Huskies got off to a strong start through the air, with quarterback Justin Shibley (Ottawa, ON) connecting with receiver Trydell Mintis (Halifax, NS) for a first down on their first offensive play of the game. On the very next play, Shibley found receiver Cherokee Robinson (Halifax, NS) in the middle of the field, and Robinson did the rest, sprinting past defenders for an 81-yard touchdown. Kicker Adam Johnston (Rothesay, NB) converted the point after, giving the Huskies an early 7-0 lead.

The Huskies defence then forced a Mounties punt, and returner Chandler Zinck-Marier (Pleasantville, NS) broke off a 39-yard return, capped off by hurdling the punter, and moved the ball into Mounties territory.

With good field position, the Huskies offence quickly scored another touchdown, with running back Reece Wyke (Winnipeg, MB) taking four carries for 24 yards, and finishing the drive with a 6-yard touchdown rush, with Johnston's convert doubling the lead to 14-0.

On the next kick-off, Johnston booted it over the returners head, and linebacker Romareo Reid (Calgary, AB) delivered a punishing hit to the returner in the end zone, scoring a rouge and extending the Huskies lead to 15-0.

Another Mounties three-and-out returned possession to the Huskies, and Shibley and Robinson continued to shine, connecting for a 63-yard catch and run deep into Mounties territory, before Shibley capped off the drive with a one-yard rush into the end zone to extend the lead to 22-0, which would go down as the score at the end of the first quarter.

Saint Mary's defence continued its dominance forcing another three-and-out punt, but the Mounties defence made a big play of their own with defensive back Chase Martin (Stillwater Lake, NS) intercepting Shibley's pass and returning it into Huskies territory. But the Huskies defence was able to shut down the Mounties drive and force their fourth punt of the first quarter.

In the second quarter, the Huskies offence continued to shine, breaking off a quick 108-yard scoring drive from their own two-yard line. Shibley continued to be accurate, completing passes to receivers Robinson, Aidan Keefe (Rothesay, NB) and Kade Smith (Halifax, NS) for 21, nine and 36 yards respectively.

But that drive was the Nicholas Park (Brampton, ON) show, as the running back scampered for 42 yards on six carries, capped off by a 14-yard touchdown rush to extend the lead to 29-0.

Just before the half, the Mounties drove into Saint Mary's territory, but veteran defensive back Kallon Edwards (Toronto, ON) picked off Mounties quarterback Spencer Joudry (Rothesay, NB) at the Huskies three-yard line to end the threat, and the Huskies took a 29-0 lead into halftime.

On the opening kick-off of the second half, Chandler Zinck-Marier had another thrilling return, reversing the field on a 84-yard scamper into Mounties territory.

After a Mounties pass interference penalty, the Huskies gave three straight hand-offs to running back Malik Williams (Ajax, ON) and he took them for 14-yards and finished off the drive with a two-yard touchdown. Williams' league-leading fourth touchdown of the campaign extended the Huskies lead to 36-0.

The Mounties finally broke through on the next drive, as Joudrey completed several passes before finding fullback Rykert Balfe (Ottawa, ON) for a seven-yard touchdown, cutting the Huskies lead to 36-7.

But Shibley and the Huskies air attack continued their outstanding play, as he connected on back-to-back passes to Aidan Keefe for 25 yards, and Joshua Jack for a 24-yard touchdown, with Johnston's extra point pushing the score to 43-7.

After a solid return from Mounties defensive back Kirk Jean-Baptiste (Ottawa, ON), the Huskies received another big play from Kallon Edwards, as the defensive back picked off Joudry for his second interception of the afternoon, and the Huskies took a 43-7 lead into the fourth quarter.

The Saint Mary's secondary continued their ball-hawking ways, as veteran defensive back Ryan Butler (Mississauga, ON) picked off Joudry for the third time, and had an electric return into the end zone that was called back due to a penalty, but the Huskies took over possession.

The Huskies led continued to grow, as Adam Johnston nailed a 38-yard field goal, and backup quarterback Allan Young (Halifax, NS) came into the game and picked up right where Shibley left off, completing passes to Robinson and Mintis.

With under a minute remaining in regulation, the Mounties moved the ball inside the Huskies five-yard line, but the Saint Mary's defence came up huge with a goal-line stand, with Kallon Edwards and linebacker Isaiah Okoli (Surrey, BC) finishing it off with a sack to secure the Huskies 46-7 victory.

The Huskies were led by their passing game with 428 total air yards, with player of the game Justin Shibley completing 18/25 passes for 385 yards and two touchdowns, and Allan Young adding 2/4 completions for 43 yards. Cherokee Robinson had a monster day with five catches for 184 yards and a touchdown, with Trydell Mintis adding six catches for 86 yards and Joshua Jack chipping in three catches for 72 yards and a touchdown.

For the second straight game, the Huskies four-headed rush attack was effective, combining to score four rushing touchdowns. Nicholas Park (eight carries for 44 yard and a touchdown), Reece Wyke (eight carries for 42 yards and a touchdown), Malik Williams (six carries for 20 yards and a touchdown) led the way, with Shibley also adding a touchdown on the ground.

On special teams, Adam Johnston was money, scoring nine points on a 38-yard field goal and perfect 6/6 on PATS. Chandler Zinck-Marier was electric as a returner, with 92 yards on two kickoff returns and 29 yards on four punt returns, and Cameron Brown had five punts for 197 yards, including two inside the Mounties 20-yard line.

Defensively, Kallon Edwards was the playmaker of the game with 4.5 tackles, one sack, two interceptions and a pass break-up, while captains Ryan Butler (7.0 tackles and an interception) and Isaiah Okoli (8.5 tackles and a sack) made plays all day long.

The Mounties were led in defeat by running back Owen Istace's 79 yards on 13 carries, and Shamar Parkinson who turned eight carries and four receptions into 72 all-purpose yards. Quarterback Spencer Joudry completed 13/22 passes for 127 yards and a touchdown, but was picked off three times.

On the defensive end, Ben Michel paced the Mounties with 7.0 tackles, while Chase Martin contributed 2.5 tackles and an interception.
