McDonnell, Mackenzie named Huskies Athletes of the Week: Nov. 20-26, 2023

Men's hockey forward Declan McDonnell and women's hockey defender Abigail Mackenzie have been named Huskies Athletes of the Week, sponsored by Freeman's Little New York Halifax, for the week ending November 26, 2023.

Declan McDonnell, a first year forward out of Buffalo, NY, is the Huskies male athlete of the week for the week ending November 26, 2023.

Over a pair of Huskies wins this weekend, McDonnell recorded six points (one goal, five assists), adding 12 shots on goal and a +5 plus/minus.

In Friday's 4-3 overtime win over the Dalhousie Tigers, McDonnell scored a goal and added two assists – including the primary assist on Andrew Coxhead's overtime winning goal. He also recorded a game-high eight shots on goal, a +2 plus/minus and won three of five face-offs taken.

In Saturday's 5-3 win over the StFX X-Men, McDonnell recorded three assists – including the primary assist on Connor Olson's game-winning goal – and was named Player of the Game. He also recorded four shots on goal, a +3 plus/minus and won one of two face-offs taken.

On the season, McDonnell leads the Huskies with 16 points in 13 games played, and a team-high +11 plus/minus rating. The first year forward has been especially effective over the last six games, scoring four goals and adding six assists, as the Huskies have won four of their last six games.

Abigail Mackenzie / Women's Hockey / Defence / Stellarton, NS / 2nd Year / Science

Abigail Mackenzie, a second year defender out of Stellarton, NS, is the Huskies female athlete of the week for the week ending November 26, 2023.

Over a pair of Huskies wins this week, Mackenzie recorded four points (two goals, two assists), and four shots on goal.

In Wednesday's 4-2 win over the Dalhousie Tigers, Mackenzie scored a pair of powerplay goals – including the game-winning goal – added an assist and three shots on goal and was named Player of the Game.

In Saturday's 3-1 win over the Mount Allison Mounties, Mackenzie recorded an assist on the Huskies opening goal, adding a shot on goal.

On the season, Mackenzie is tied for second on the Huskies with 10 points (four goals, six assists) in 14 games played. The second year defender has been especially effective over the last three games, scoring three goals and adding three assists as the Huskies have won three straight.
