HALIFAX, N.S. – Despite a game-high 19 points from Arianna Macias (Tampa, Florida) the SMU women's basketball team (5-6 AUS) was unable to overcome a 12-point deficit against UNB (7-5 ACC) in an 62-50 loss Saturday night at the Homburg Centre.
Both teams struggled to start the opening quarter, as the game was tied 4-4 halfway thru the frame.
UNB led 18-12 after 10 minutes and the Varsity Reds extended their lead in the second quarter, outscoring the Huskies 22-15 in the frame and took a 13-point lead into halftime, 40-27.
The third quarter saw UNB outpace SMU 17-12 in the frame and led 57-38 after thirty minutes.
SMU controlled the final frame, outscoring UNB 11-6 as the Reds held on for the 62-50 win.
UNB's Krystal Osburn (Ottawa, ON) and Mikaela Dodig (Bolton, ON) had 16 and 13 points, respectively, while Grace Simpson (Fredericton, NB) notched a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds for the Reds.
The Reds led the Huskies in several statistical categories including rebounds (43-37), points in the paint (16-8), points off turnovers (20-16), second-chance points (8-3) and bench points (14-5).
The Reds return to the road Jan. 24 for a 6 p.m. matchup against Acadia while the Huskies return to action Wednesday, Jan. 22 to host the Dal Tigers at 6 p.m.
