Huskies post 3-1 win over Axemen

WOLFVILLE, N.S. - The Saint Mary's Huskies defeated the Acadia Axemen on the road 3-1 during Sunday afternoon's match.

The Huskies had several early corner-kicks that lead to some excellent scoring chances, but none of their shots found the net.

Gordon McLaughlin (Peterborough, Ont.) of the Axemen sent a rocket of a shot towards the Huskies' net and whacked the crossbar, keeping the score at 0-0.

It was the Huskies who finally found the back of the net first. Rookie Neil Spires (Hubley, N.S.) picked up the unassisted goal for his first of the season.

The Axemen were unable to register a shot on net until the 50th minute, forcing Huskies keeper Jensen Brown (Enfield, N.S.) to make his first save of the game.

Saint Mary's was able to double their lead to 2-0 in the 54th minute after a goal from forward Alex Black (Halifax, N.S.). The shot from centerfield was assisted by Cian Tousignant-O Siadhail (Timberlea, N.S.).

Huskies defender Kwaku Korankye (Halifax, N.S.) came to the rescue just as the ball was about to trickle across the Saint Mary's goalline to keep the score at 2-0.

Tyler Dorey (Dartmouth, N.S.) tapped in the Huskies' third goal after a miscommunication between Acadia keeper Pietro Nottegar (Dartmouth, N.S.) and one of his defenders.

Acadia finally cracked the scoreboard late in the second half. Forward Joe Iatrou sent a long-ball up the field that was mishandled by SMU goalkeeper Brown. Ben Chisholm (Lunenburg, N.S.) picked up the dropped ball and knocked it in.

Chrisholm's sole goal for the Axemen earned him the Player of the Game award, while Adam Dunsworth was named the Subway Player of  the Game.

The final score read 3-1 for Saint Mary's.

Acadia plays their next game at home when they host Dalhousie this Friday.

The Saint Mary's Huskies will be the home team this Friday when they take on the Cape Breton University Capers.
